MEDIAWORKS: Mentoring Youth the Audio Visual Arts

Our plan

I had been volunteering at Goodman Community Center in a design and screen printing program called Mess Hall Press for a number of years. I had just finished my first music video and film when it occurred to me to create a creative youth based audio visual program that would mentor kids in the creative communication professions. It was serendipitous that Becky Steinhoff, Executive Director of Goodman Community Center, had plans to create a media program but didn't have the means to make it happen.

What we did

I put together a corps of media professionals and together we created MEDIAWORKS. Our focus has been video production, a burgeoning industry that requires skills from a vast array of artistic professions. Youth participate in the entire process: creative brainstorming, storyboarding, shooting, and editing their work.

Our results

The program has taken off and we've worked with over 50 youth in the five months since we began. We have our own YouTube account that showcases the student's work (www.youtube/goodmanmediaworks.com Youth and adults can also become our friend on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/MEDIAWORKS/130052804488) The kids are thrilled to be able to see their work on YouTube. The Madison community is embracing our efforts and MEDIAWORKS is thriving.
